Benelux JBoss User Group

Yesterday I went to the jBug Benelux, which was organising a meeting in Rotterdam. Together with 3 colleagues we arrived 20min late due to traffic. About 40 people attended, together with free beer and some fried stuff it was worth while.

We started off with jBoss Portal, something I had no practical experience with. I was impressed with some of the features. Especially the administrator web-console was something I liked. In my eyes it’s a great enabling technology for SOA based architectures, where entire web applications can provide a single service.

Next was Hibernate Search. About a year and a half I experimented with this for a project, where I had to compare Compass and Hibernate Search. In the end, Compass had the upper hand since Hibernate Search was really brand new. Now, seeing the live demo, I was amazed in the simplicity of the engine. With just minimal work great results were shown. Another fan for Hibernate Search!

Women in IT (I hope this is the correct link) was the next one, where two brave women talked about their struggle in IT and how they tried to get more women in the sector. It was followed by a short but interesting discussion.

Drools was the closing act. I’ve read quite a lot about it so it wasn’t all new. What did stand out was the great tooling support around it. The eclipse plugin was truly a beauty pearl.

After all I was very pleased with my first jbug attendence. The networking afterwards was great as well, I’ve talked to some of the greater influences in jboss. To be repeated surely!

Greeting,
Andries
